I’ve started this blog for a few reasons. The first is that I need a website where I can host my portfolio, and I feel like any personal website should have a blog. Secondly, I’ve been wanting to write about music and sound in general but not wanting to put barely-related material on my band’s blog or Describetheruckus.com, although I will be cross-posting there a bit. Lastly, I just miss writing more than 140 characters when I want to share my thoughts online.
This first post comes on the day that the world learned of the passing of Beastie Boy MCA. Even as recently as last year the Beastie Boys released the excellent single “Make Some Noise” along with this cameo-filled video directed by Spike Jonze.
Right now I’m curious about whether MCA and his fellow Beastie Boys occupied space on John Peel’s shelves, which are being digitized as I write this. We won’t know until May 8th, when records from the letter “B” of Peel’s collection are posted on TheSpace.org. I’ve been making my way through what’s posted from letter “A”. A few of the records are linked on Spotify although some won’t play here in the U.S. What a grand project. I’m sure I’ll be posting some of my favorite finds here.
One thing I can promise you’ll find if you subscribe to this blog is a superflatness of sorts. I plan on talking about whatever music interests me in the moment. Sometimes that will mean posting expensive-looking rap videos or sometimes it will mean analyzing a song or sometimes it will mean talking about live coding languages or sometimes it will mean sharing my thoughts on teaching music to kids. I’m uncertain about what, if anything, will tie it all together.
***UPDATE***
Because the John Peel archive is only including the first 100 titles for each letter in this initial run, the furthest it goes in “B” is currently The Bailey Brothers as of May 11, 2012.
